COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:

Film attendance is mandatory !!

20%   QUIZZES. There will be 14 quizzes on the readings, class discussions, in-class and assigned films. Some quizzes can be unannounced. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR A QUIZ.

15%   Seven FILM ANALYSES ( typed ), one for each of the first seven films. Each analysis is due two class days after the film is shown. Length: approximately two pages each.

15%   5-6 PAGE PAPER ( 1250-1500 words ) in which you either compare an in-class film with a contemporary film of your choice OR you apply several arguments from no more than three articles in the "Reader" to the analysis of a contemporary film of your choice.

20%   MID-TERM EXAMINATION ( multiple choice, true or false and short answers and essay ). Bring a Blue Book ( 10 cents plus tax at Bill's Bookstore ).

20%   FINAL EXAMINATION ( short answers and essay ). Bring a Blue Book.

10%   CLASS PARTICIPATION. Consists of regular and punctual attendance with active participation in the class dialogue. We want to build a strong community of inquiry. The life of a classroom community is put at stake by absences and tardiness. Academic virtues, such as solidarity and respect in the midst of diversity and difference, are necessary to generate and share knowledge. Your individual contribution to the preservation of pluralism and attainment of consensus through intelligent conversation and punctual attendance facilitates learning. This is taken very seriously!

Criteria For Class Participation :

  • Active Participation in Class Dialogue ( includes academic attitudes and critical thinking ) : 6 points
  • Handing in Assignments When They are Due: 5 points
  • Class Attendance: 4 points

Criteria For Grading Papers! :

ATTENDANCE POLICY. The policy on absences: after three UN-excused (undocumented) absences your grade drops down by one step. Tardiness means after class has begun and early departure. If you sleep, or read in class, you will be marked absent. PRESENT means PHYISICALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY PRESENT!!!!!

Make-up examinations will be given ONLY in case of illness or other CERTIFIABLE emergencies. No late summaries accepted. No paper extensions unless prior arrangements are made because of certifi able illness. NO INCOMPLETES ARE GRANTED ( except for highly extraordinary circumstances such as certifiable illness or major emergency. If this is the case, please see Dr. Golden, Director, Program in the Humanities ).

PLEASE DO NOT:

  1. Ask me: " I am going to be absent tomorrow, Are we going to do anything important ?"
  2. Ask me to change a quiz or exam because you need to catch a plane.
  3. Ask me: "Do we need to watch black and white movies?"
  4. Ask me to postpone quizzes or cancel classes
  5. Tell me you do not have a computer: THERE ARE PLENTY IN THE LIBRARY.
  6. Tell me that you cannot come to class because your car broke down. There are buses and taxis in the city. I also suppose you know someone that can give you a ride. If everything else fails, you can always turn to old fashion walking!!! If this happens ten minutes before the class starts, it means that from now on you need to leave earlier.
  7. Tell me you cannot reach me. You have my e-mail address and my office and home phone numbers.
  8. Tell me that your printer broke down. You can always e-mail me your papers.
  9. Tell me that you do not understand the readings and that is why you do poorly in your exams and quizzes. RAISE YOUR HANDS AND ASK QUESTIONS UNTIL YOUR INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY IS SATISFIED!!!
  10. Talk when someone else is talking
  11. Copy and paste your papers from the Internet or any other text. This is called Plagiarism and it can cost you your academic career, your future job, and your house in the suburbs, etc. etc!! Please refer to the Academic Honor Code.
And now that you know the eleven commandments, RELAX, SIT BACK, and ENJOY your FALL SEMESTER!!!! J
